What is Coast FIRE?

Coast FIRE answers a powerful question: How much do I need invested today so that my portfolio grows to my retirement target without any additional contributions? Once you hit that amount—your Coast FIRE number—you can “coast”: stop contributing and let compound growth do the work.

The concept relies on compound growth. Your target retirement portfolio is based on your desired spending and a safe withdrawal rate (typically 4%). Your Coast FIRE number is that target divided by the growth factor over your remaining years. A longer time horizon dramatically lowers the Coast threshold—starting early is one of the biggest advantages.

What affects your Coast FIRE number?

  • Time horizon — More years to retirement means more compounding. A 25-year-old needs far less than a 45-year-old for the same target.
  • Expected returns — Higher assumed returns lower the Coast number; lower returns raise it. Historical stock market returns are often cited around 7–10% before inflation.
  • Spending level — A higher desired retirement spending raises your target portfolio and thus your Coast number.
  • Withdrawal rate — A 4% withdrawal rate implies a target of 25× annual spending. A more conservative 3% implies ~33×.
